New York Street Fashion

His vest just pops! Sort of makes you think Native American/M.I.A. doesn't it? And his shoes class up his style a bit too.

Trends trickle down to ready to wear, but do they also climb up too?

Fashion trickles down from couture to ready to wear, but does it also climb up? One example of this that I am investigating is in shoes. Creative Recreation often places a strap over the top of the shoelaces. Dereon does this too. It reminds of skateboarding culture in the early 90s with companies like Vision Street Wear and Airwalk. The strap was designed as a “lace-saver” that skateboarders really felt they needed to protect the shoelaces from getting quickly torn up from the grip tape on the skateboard from doing tricks. My theory is that it was first on skateboarding shoes out of necessity and over time became fashionable, hence today’s Creative Recreation designs. So, with this particular trend, I think fashion climbed up, not trickled down. By the way, skateboarding was sort of born in California. Creative Recreation is based in Beverly Hills. Hmmmmmmm.

Michael Jackson graphic tees on Prince Street

This vinyl MJ screen by Creative Custom Clothing was done pretty well on these tees.

SPORTMAX audio installation

SPORTMAX in SOHO has an audio installation that’s on display until December 2009. The staff was very friendly and welcomed me to walk through the store and enjoy the ephemeral atmosphere that is created by the space itself, the speaker boxes that resemble giant wooden polygonal rocks with speakers in them and the low-key, orchestral electronic sounds.

With the good vibe of the staff and the ambiance of the music and presentation that the installation provided, I felt immersed in another world during my time there. I also got to talk with the store manager about fashion tied to philanthropy and I’m happy to say that SPORTMAX donates to charities.

I'll definitely be returning to see what else they have going on.

Welcome to Pop Can Do It!

Hola,

Pop Can Do It here,

So as I spend much of my time pop-culture focused, I often consider how to tie helping my fellow humans with it. Michael Jackson comes to mind. Any time I start a little MJ research, philanthropy always comes into the mix.

I'll be blogging about fashion, music, art and how they can positively affect all of us and also how they already affect us in a great way, but you may not have noticed it.

I'm definitely focused on the dopeness and not the wackness. So come here for a little smile in your day, learn something about pop culture and how it relates to having fun in life and share your comments to help make this a blog people can feel is their own and learn something from.

Alright sunshines! ttys!
